Volunteering
Volunteering at the Greek Council for Refugees is not a simple theory; on the contrary, it is the basis of the whole edifice and its services as well. From the members of the Board who are volunteers, to the educators-teachers who implement all educational activities of the Intercultural Center for the Promotion of Refugee Integration “PIXIDA”, the lawyers of the Pan-Hellenic Network of Volunteer Lawyers who are the eyes and the ears of the Legal Service of GCR throughout Greece, as well as dozens of volunteers who assist in daily and extraordinary activities of GCR.
The role and contribution of volunteers to the work of GCR is crucial, therefore its reinforcement is our key target. It is clear that without their valuable charitable assistance it would be impossible to carry on our work, given the fact that the cost of these services would exceed the capacities of our Association. Having as an ultimate goal the success of their mission, volunteers are trained on basic issues regarding the refugee population, their needs and capacities, in order to respond effectively to the demands of their work.
In addition, refugees themselves become volunteers: operating in a network of mutual aid, refugees who have been in the country for a longer period of time help voluntarily the newcomers; for example in interpreting, accompanying them to services etc. The support of volunteers not only does it contribute to fulfill the objectives of different activities, but also helps to inform and raise awareness of the local community on the humanitarian issue of the need to protect refugees.
The volunteer opportunities at GCR are many and varied. From legal aid to translation of texts, from the support of fundraising events and awareness, to transportation of objects that citizens offer to GCR.
