With a joint letter addressed to the outgoing Portuguese Presidency of the European Council, on 20 June –World Refugee Day– 24 civil society organisations call on European member states to display the necessary determination and responsibility and work jointly towards the better management of the Refugee Issue, by pledging to relocate 5,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Greece. This would be a further and significant step towards both safeguarding the rights of forcibly displaced people and towards a functional European asylum system that honors the principle of solidarity and responsibility sharing.

This letter is the first step towards a new joint endeavor of organizations throughout Europe and follows a similar campaign that took place in early 2020, with the participation of the Greek Council for Refugees. The specific campaign called on member states to safeguard the rights of unaccompanied children in Greece, by relocating those trapped on the Greek islands, on account of European policies (for more, see here).
