Aim: The program aims to facilitate the protection of children, families and minors by ensuring their access and utilization of all appropriate and available services within the current protection framework in a specialised Center for Families and Children in the Centre of Athens.


In the Shelter you can find a Social Worker, a Psychologist & a Teacher, who provide:
• Information on social, accession, medical, labor, educational and other matters.
• Art/cultural activities for children.
• Psychological support groups for adults.
• Greek lessons for adults and children.
• Learning support for primary and secondary students.
• Information – guidance about the enrollment of students in all levels of education.
• Individual psychological support for children.


The lawyers of the Shelter provide individual legal assistance to unaccompanied minors and families that apply for international protection. In particular:
• They provide information and advice to the applicants regarding the process of applying for international protection, and particularly regarding the application for asylum and the possibility for family reunification and relocation.
• They provide legal representation to children and families before the administrative and judicial authorities, in order to achieve a favorable decision regarding their application.
• They cooperate with the Juvenile Prosecutor in order to be appointed as guardians of unaccompanied minors under 15, and to be able to legally represent them.
• They provide advice to the applicants regarding their rights, and they facilitate the applicants’ access to the application process.
• They provide information regarding the applicants’ rights to family reunification and relocation.
• They provide information regarding the status of their applications.



The Employment Counselor of the Shelter provides:
• Information regarding labor rights and obligations.
• Support on practical matters (Social Security Number-AMKA, Tax Registration Number-AFM, health insurance card/booklet, etc.)
• Employment counseling (development of personal skills, writing resumes, preparation of self-presentation for interviews).
• Approaching potential employers, searching for job opportunities and getting a job.
• Referral to Greek language and professional training programs.


The program aims to facilitate the protection of children and their families in order to ensure the appropriate services in a specialized Unit and a Family Friendly space in the Centre of Athens. This project foresees a holistic approach, allowing GCR’s team to be able to offer a range of legal and social services, supported with supplementary activities for families, children and UAMs.
The “Center for Families and Children” will inform and assist children and their families with access to basic health and care services, access to education and the provision of legal counseling and psychological support. The initiative will utilize close synergies with reliable actors thus prioritizing the identification of the most vulnerable cases.
